It’s important to understand the pros and cons of today’s termite pretreatments for new construction. There are basically three types of treatment: soil treatments, baits and wood treatments. Realtors need to know that if a bait station system is installed at a home, a family must continue to pay the annual fees for service or the bait stations are removed, leaving the home defenseless to termite attack. With soil treatments, 300 gallons of chemicals are pumped into the ground around and under a typical home. Many of these chemicals will lose their effectiveness in as little as 5 to 10 years, requiring retreatment. Bora-Care wood treatments are HUD allowed and EPA registered, and are the only wood treatment labeled by the EPA as a “primary” termite pretreatment. Once Bora-Care is applied, termites cannot consume treated wood or build tubes over treated wood or concrete. And, since Bora-Care’s active ingredient is a borate mineral salt, it will not break down over time. Bora-Care remains in the wood as long as the wood is in service, providing years of residual protection.
